ITS A 5 CYLINDER TURBO DIESEL WAGON
Feels like a tank, quite heavy car. But the engine always has plenty of torque to pull a full load. Its not super quick but its got more than enough power for overtaking on the motorway.
Steering is light with very little feel, does not have the traditional spring back to center steering wheel.. Can catch you out going around corners if you are not used to it
Room is plentiful. Can fit 5 TALL adults and luggage... I am 190cm (6"4) something. That is something that I struggle to find in modern cars of its size.
I recently saw a Sanyong stavic (Rodius) 270 diesel taxi that shares the same engine with over 400,000kms on it... Although the shocks were completely gone. Reminds me of what a solid engine this car has.
for a 14 year old car.. it still looks surprisingly modern, i like it

Glad to see that you're sticking around. Most newcomers make a intro post and disappear into the darkness.

Saw the P card, haha.

Its seen some of the rough stuff before.. been on the sands and across the country a few times
but when it gets really rough you start to get punctures. Now you try getting the specified replacement tyres in the land of Toyota land-cruisers and Nissan patrols miles away from any major town haha

I've never been to Australia, but it looks like a 4x4er's wet dream to me. I'll take your word for how tough it is on your parts. It's on my list of places to travel in my truck.

I drank the water here. Now I'm trapped forever.
Kidding, I like it here. Community is great.

Hell yeah W163. The only thing you're missing for it to be the ultimate-jalop-mobile, is the 5 speed manual, and a brown paint job. I am jealous of your car :P I want to drive the diesel...

My sister recently traded in her gasoline version with 260,000 miles on it.

hmm.. very un-Jalop like to say this... but i think this car is better as an auto
also. I have a question for you. When i was in NYC a while back, i kept seeing all these ugly nudge bars on city small SUV's. It looks positively FRAGILE especially on this lexus which was rather common... ITS SOO UGLY.
Is there any purpose to have one fitted (ie any forest trails they might possibly need one for..) or is it for looks.
For the Australian outback you can get huge roo bars fitted in case of kangaroo strike. ^those utes above are commonly seen in the outback
This is a more modern interpretation of the roo bar for those travel on country roads a lot^
Police cars in coutry towns are also fitted with one for safety
otherwise on 4x4's they are usually fitted with an ARB bar if they intend to go offroading

I would like to drive a manual one regardless. Part of this car's appeal is how smooth it is, so I guess an auto compliments that.
Honestly, it's usually for looks. People love tacky chrome and stuff in NYC and the only thing SUV users here will be hitting is pedestrians and shopping cars in the parking lots of malls. They're useless. I guess an advantage is in sidewalk parking, that your bumpers won't get dinged, but then again it gives you less space to park.

I once took a similar ML through a car wash with 278,000 miles. my initial reaction was "is this thing gonna leak?"

Pretty sure that's an SUV, dude. ;)

Haha I would be more worried about the electrics going wonky after a wash. The drivetrain was reliable, but there were times she would be driving, and suddenly all the exterior lights would go out, and come back a few mins later. No one could figure it out.

Ha... our ABS module failed
the hazard lights once came on not flashing.. just on for over an hour
the cruise control was buggy
and sometimes the hazards flash randomly when you turn the wheel

I washed this ML at a mercedes dealership. If anything went wrong with the car as a result of the wash, the owner would be happy to keep their brand new ML loaner car for a few more days
